The ninth annual Vegas Fringe Festival has begun with performances from June 8 – 17 at the Las Vegas Little Theatre at 3920 Schiff Drive near the corner of Spring Mountain and Valley View with performances in both the Mainstage and Black Box Theatres. There are many new and established plays and performances being performed several times through the dates of the festival and the performances are no longer than 90 minutes. I, myself am performing in one of the shows entitled “Any Body for Tea?”, a whimsical story about a handsome homicide detective who learns his neighbors would “kill” to have tea with him!
So what is a Fringe? The Fringe started in 1947 as an alternative festival that played concurrently with the Edinburgh International Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Though not invited to participate, groups of actors, musicians, and the like decided to perform at various venues on the fringe of the EIF. Robert Kemp, a local journalist, in 1948 gave the festival the name Fringe: “Round the fringe of official Festival drama, there seems to be more private enterprise than before…” Kemp wrote.
In the United States no one organization or individual owns, controls or regulates the name “Fringe”. There are no national rules for how each individual festival operates; festival content, finances, and structure vary from city to city. Generally, all festivals are committed to an open forum of expression that minimizes the financial risks for both artists and audiences. Fringes work hard to keep production fees and ticket prices low so that more people can participate in the festivals.
The performances are not censored – you will find anything from bawdy to family-friendly. Fringes are a vast variety of genres and feature a wide array of original material—sometimes by design, but usually because that’s what Fringes do naturally well. The festivals take place in many different cities and countries and can last a few weeks. In Las Vegas the Fringe lasts for 10 days.
