The Knights got Stoned

The Vegas Golden Knights have made another trade just before the deadline to take another run at the Stanley Cup in their second season. The Knights acquired high-scoring winger Mark Stone from the Ottawa Senators on Monday for defense prospect Erik Brannstrom, forward Oscar Lindberg and the Dallas Stars’ 2020 second-round pick. Vegas also received minor league forward Tobias Lindberg in the trade.

Stone is a top-line talent the Golden Knights hope can help them make another deep playoff run as they did last year in getting to the Cup Final. “He plays a complete game, plays every situation, and he’s going to really help our hockey club,” coach Gerard Gallant said. “He was the top guy on the board and we went out and got him, so it shows our players what we want to do and get things on track here and get going again.”

Losing 10 of their past 13 games has hurt the Golden Knights in a top-heavy Pacific Division, but Stone should provide an immediate boost. The 26-year-old has 28 goals and 34 assists for 62 points in 59 games this season; two points shy of his career high.

Stone is in the midst of his fifth consecutive 20-goal and 50-point season. And he said on Canadian television he agreed to but hadn’t yet signed a long-term contract extension, which makes the trade all the more valuable for the Golden Knights.

“He’s been great for a lot of years now, it feels like,” Vegas center William Karlsson said. “Huge addition for our roster. The guy can pass, the guy can score, so he’s kind of the full package.”

After trading a first-, a second- and a third-round pick at the 2018 deadline for winger Tomas Tatar, Golden Knights general manager George McPhee again anted up for a playoff push. Owner Bill Foley wanted his franchise to win a title within the first five years, and this is another move to help that effort in the short and long term.

All it cost Vegas off its NHL roster is Oscar Lindberg, a 27-year-old who has 12 points in 35 games this season. The team took him from the New York Rangers in the expansion draft, drafted Brannstrom in 2017 with the pick it received from the Islanders to take Mikhail Grabovski’s contract off their hands and got the second-rounder from Dallas for Marc Methot, whom they selected from the Senators in the expansion draft.

Go Knights Go!

What are the last 2 words of the National Anthem? “Play Ball” !!!!!

On April 9, Summerlin will hear that phrase, when the new $150 million Las Vegas Ballpark opens. Built by the Howard Hughes Corp. – the same developer of the master-plan community the ball park resides in – Summerlin; the Ballpark is across the street from the very successful Downtown Summerlin, a shopping, restaurant and entertainment destination.  Additionally, the City National Arena (where the Vegas Golden Knight practice) is next door and Red Rock Hotel and Casino is just up the street.

The new stadium will feature 4Topps Premium Seating’s innovative Air Flow seats! Over 8,000 seats will be installed in the stadium’s lower tier bowls, suites and party zones, as well as in both outfield corner sections, where the seats will swivel 360 degrees with a front beverage railing. The installation makes the Aviators the first team in sports history with a home ballpark boasting all seats made from breathable mesh. With the seats, lounge areas and standing social areas, Las Vegas Ballpark’s total capacity is 10,000.

Want to watch it being built? Visit www.thelvballpark.com and check out the time lapse camera! It’s really cool!

The 51’s have changed their name to the Aviators and are now a triple A team for the Oakland A’s and no longer affiliated with the New York Mets.  Professional Sports Catering (PSC) is the official hospitality partner for the new Las Vegas Ballpark. PSC, the leader in food and beverage for Minor League Baseball ballparks across the country, will offer fans an array of innovative culinary options throughout the highly anticipated new stadium.

In advance of the Las Vegas Ballpark opening, PSC’s culinary team has begun to identify local restaurateurs to partner with at the ballpark and is studying the culinary trends and preferences that define Las Vegas dining.

They have also launched the Legacy Walk at Las Vegas Ballpark commemorative brick program. The program will allow fans the opportunity to purchase bricks that will be located at the front entrance of the new Las Vegas Ballpark, located in Downtown Summerlin. A portion of every brick sold will be donated to Olive Crest, supporting children who have suffered from abandonment, abuse and neglect.

About a month after opening day, will be our annual group baseball outing… I take several clients and friends to the game every year… my treat! You might say we “have a ball”!

Two plays… just one ticket!

Here are two one act plays, being performed together, that you don’t want to miss, brought to us by the Speeding Theatre & Super Summer Theatre’s Off-season series. “Any Body For Tea” and “The Omelet Murder Case” can be seen on March 7,8,9,14,15,16 | 7:00PM and March 10 & 17 | 2:00PM at Super Summer Theatre’s indoor studios located near “The Strip” at 4340 S Valley View Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89103.(these are not being performed at their outdoor stage at Spring Mountain Ranch)

“Any Body For Tea” is the first one act and I am in this show as homicide detective Dennis O’Finn! (Did you know I was a thespian?)  This is a comedy about six “mature” single ladies that notice a handsome younger man living across the street.  The group decides they have to get his attention somehow.  When they find out he is a homicide detective they execute a plan to meet him and then flirt with him while he tries to figure out “who dunnit”.  Then, the connivers raise the stakes when O’finn begins to ignore their gestures of hospitality.

The second one-act is “The Omelet Murder Case”. This play imagines what would happen if the tragedy of Hamlet were played like a story in a trashy detective novel. Shy on poetry but loaded with poetic license (and laughter) “The Omelet Murder Case” introduces Chicago’s number one private investigator and hack writer, “Shake” Speare. You’ll find references to plenty of the Bard’s other works sprinkled throughout the spoof as well!

Both of these plays are set in the 1950s in Chicago – what a coincidence!

For more information you can phone (702) 332-9246 or go online to https://supersummertheatre.org/shows/ to get tickets.

2019 – The Year of the Pig – Parade in Downtown Summerlin

Celebrate Lunar New Year and the Year of the Pig at Downtown Summerlin on Tuesday, February 5 at 6 p.m.  You can enjoy watching the festive Dragon and Lion Dance with a percussion ensemble playing music.  There will also be traditional fan dancers, stilt walkers and of course lucky red envelopes filled with gift cards, while the supply lasts.

The parade route runs down Park Centre Drive in the middle of Downtown Summerlin as long as it is not raining or snowing (ha).  Bring the whole family as I am sure your kiddos will love it.  Make a night of it and go to one of the myriad of restaurants that offer all types of food in every price range.

The Pig is the twelfth of the Chinese Zodiac animals. There is a myth that the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. Pig was late because he overslept. Another story says that a wolf destroyed Pig’s house and he had to rebuild his home before he could set off. When he arrived, he was the last one and could only take twelfth place.

The Pig is also associated with the Earthly Branch (地支—dì zhī) hài (亥), and the hours 9–11 in the night. In terms of yin and yang (阴阳—yīn yáng), the Pig is yin. In Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth.

Their chubby faces and big ears are signs of fortune as well. Pigs have a beautiful personality and are blessed with good fortune in life.  In Chinese culture it is good to be a Pig.

Maybe I’ll see you at the parade!

Can’t miss local theater – “Never Too Late”

For those who love Super Summer Theatre (and who doesn’t) and can’t wait to go up to the outdoor theatre at Spring Mountain Ranch, I have some great news.  The Super Summer Theatre Studios (their indoor theater near the Palms hotel) at 4340 S. Valley View Blvd #204 has a few shows coming up before the outdoor season starts.

Starting February 14 and running through February 24 the comedy play Never Too Late will be performed.  This comedy is the inspiration for the TV series All in the Family.

About the show- Fifty-something Edith Lambert is thrilled to find out that she’s going to have a baby. Her husband Harry, however, is less enthusiastic. Middle-aged Harry lives comfortably with his wife Edith and his daughter and her husband. Though rather sour and a bit mean, he is in fact content. So when Edith finds she is pregnant again he is anything but overjoyed. Apart from the changes it will mean, he is now seen as some sort of older superman in town. Meanwhile his daughter (also pregnant)  sees child bearing as a way out of the extra housework she is having to do, the achievement of which starts to put pressure on her increasingly tired husband.

The play is quite funny and a good family activity.  If you go to the box office in advance, tickets are $15 cash and $17.50 if you are using a credit card.  You can also buy tickets on line for $17.50.  If you pay at the door (seating is limited) the price in cash is $25 or by credit card $27.50.

For more information or to buy tickets go to https://supersummertheatre.org/off-season-shows/

Downtown Summerlin still evolving

Downtown Summerlin has been a success from the day it opened and over the last few years has gotten more diverse in its offerings to all Las Vegans.

There are restaurants of every possible kind of foods – from fast food all the way to elegant dining establishments.  Also an incredible amount of varied retail shops from department stores to any type of boutique store to find that special something you might be looking for. Over the course of a year over 18 million visitations have been recorded for Downtown Summerlin.

Now Downtown Summerlin has become a sports center with the Golden Knights practice facility named City National Arena and the soon to be completed Las Vegas Ballpark for the Las Vegas Aviators triple-A baseball team (formerly the 51’s and the Stars before that).

There are two Class-A office buildings with the completion of Two Summerlin that spans 150,000 square feet.  Many firms have moved to Downtown Summerlin for a variety of reasons.  One reason is the location – the 215 Beltway makes for an easy commute from almost anywhere in the Las Vegas Valley.

The second luxury apartment complex is under construction that will include 267 residents with completion scheduled for early 2019.

I’m sure we will hear about more additions to Downtown Summerlin throughout the year. (Do you remember driving by the site for all those years when a steel skeleton just rusted?)

Global Winter Wonderland at the Rio Hotel

The Global Winter Wonderland is a 38 day festival that starts on December 14, 2018 and runs thru January 20, 2019.  This event celebrates diversity and the holiday season, with music, entertainment and food from around the globe, and there are beautiful Chinese lantern creations that are at the heart of this celebration. Global Winter Wonderland is a family event that gives those who attend an overall experience that satisfies all of the senses! Oh and by the way if you buy your tickets at Walgreens you get 50 % off each ticket!

This year the decorations will push the limits of the imagination and innovation to deliver an event that will set an entirely new standard on what a festival is.  The Global Winter Wonderland is great for kids and adults alike.

You can travel the world in one night at Global Winter Wonderland 2018 Las Vegas! Celebrate the holidays by visiting some of the world’s most iconic landmarks, all in one night. You don’t need airline tickets or your suitcase; Global Winter Wonderland is the premiere “Chinese Lantern festival” in the United States and this holiday season we will bring the world to you!  The displays go by continent so the following is a little guideline of what to expect – and you will see a lot more.

Europe -Although many people celebrate Christmas on December 25th, in France the festive season officially begins on December 6th – St Nicholas Day. It used to be the custom that on this day gifts would be exchanged but now the tradition has been postponed to Christmas Eve when Père Noël (Father Christmas) visits the well-behaved children around France.

Asia –On the mainland, the small percentage of Chinese citizens who consider themselves Christians unofficially as well as many other non-Christian individuals celebrate Christmas-like festivities. Many customs, including sending cards, exchanging gifts, and hanging stockings are very similar to Western celebrations.

North America -Christmas is observed widely on December 25th. Governments recognizing the holiday include those of: the United States, where it is a federal holiday for federal employees and a legal holiday in the respective states; Canada, where it is a nationwide statutory holiday; and Mexico, where it is also a nationwide statutory holiday.

Central America includes some parts of Mexico and Mexican Christmas is filled with over 30 traditions found only within Mexican Christmas. Over nine days, groups of townspeople go from door to door in a fashion of when the parents of the unborn baby Jesus Christ looked for shelter to pass the night when they arrived at Bethlehem, and are periodically called inside homes to participate in the breaking of a candy-filled piñata.

On the continent of Africa Christmas Day is a public holiday in Eritrea that is celebrated on January 7th or on 27th Tahsas of the Ethiopian calendars. Christmas is called Ledet in Eritrea or Gena in Ethiopia. Many people who are Christian in these two countries fast for 40 days (it is called fast of the prophets).

Christmas traditions in Australia and New Zealand have many similarities to British, Irish, American and Canadian traditions, including traditional Christmas symbols featuring winter iconography. This means a red fur-coated Santa Claus riding a sleigh, songs such as Jingle Bells, and various Christmas scenes on Christmas cards and decorations.

Summerlin is collecting toys for Foster Care Kids for Christmas

The master-planned community of Summerlin once again is holding a special toy drive for foster care kids in Southern Nevada.  The community is accepting new unwrapped toys in Downtown Summerlin up until December 14.

This is such a worthwhile cause so don’t be a Grinch – no child should go without a gift for the holidays.  Last year the toy drive was exceptionally successful – Tom Warden, senior vice president of community and government relations for Summerlin, stated this year will be even stronger.  The toy drive is organized by Lawrence Weekly for the children of the Department of Family services.

There are a few toy drop-off points in the Summerlin community.  They are:

Downtown Summerlin Concierge located in the breezeway of One Summerlin – opened from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Summerlin Corporate Office at 10801 W. Charleston Blvd, third floor from 8a.m. to 5p.m.

Summerlin HOA South in the Breezeway of 1980 Festival Plaza Drive – suite 340 Monday thru Friday 9a.m. to 5p.m.

Summerlin HOA North at 2120 Snow Trail Monday thru Friday from 9a.m. to 5p.m.

The Ridges Custom Home Sales Center, 11277 Marble Ridge Drive that is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The toy drive is the fifth annual in Summerlin and over the last few years over 20,000 toys have been donated according to Commissioner Weekly.

This is such a worthwhile cause – so if you can donate a new unwrapped toy please do and know you are responsible for putting a smile on a child’s face this holiday season.
