Summerlin is collecting toys for Foster Care Kids for Christmas

The master-planned community of Summerlin once again is holding a special toy drive for foster care kids in Southern Nevada.  The community is accepting new unwrapped toys in Downtown Summerlin up until December 14.

This is such a worthwhile cause so don’t be a Grinch – no child should go without a gift for the holidays.  Last year the toy drive was exceptionally successful – Tom Warden, senior vice president of community and government relations for Summerlin, stated this year will be even stronger.  The toy drive is organized by Lawrence Weekly for the children of the Department of Family services.

There are a few toy drop-off points in the Summerlin community.  They are:

Downtown Summerlin Concierge located in the breezeway of One Summerlin – opened from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Summerlin Corporate Office at 10801 W. Charleston Blvd, third floor from 8a.m. to 5p.m.

Summerlin HOA South in the Breezeway of 1980 Festival Plaza Drive – suite 340 Monday thru Friday 9a.m. to 5p.m.

Summerlin HOA North at 2120 Snow Trail Monday thru Friday from 9a.m. to 5p.m.

The Ridges Custom Home Sales Center, 11277 Marble Ridge Drive that is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The toy drive is the fifth annual in Summerlin and over the last few years over 20,000 toys have been donated according to Commissioner Weekly.

This is such a worthwhile cause – so if you can donate a new unwrapped toy please do and know you are responsible for putting a smile on a child’s face this holiday season.

Downtown Summerlin’s Treat Street – a great safe place to take the kids on Halloween

Wednesday is Halloween and that means everyone is dressed up (even pets) for this fun holiday in Las Vegas.  Many adults are driving to parties all over the city and kids are trick or treating down the streets and let’s face it – we want everyone to enjoy themselves and be safe.

If you live in Summerlin or anywhere else in the Las Vegas Valley “Treat Street” in Downtown Summerlin is a wonderful and safe alternative for everyone.  The festivities start at 5p.m. and go until 7p.m.

The following are some of the features offered at Treat Street.  The retailers in Downtown Summerlin will hand out candy to all trick or treaters.  There will be a Spooky Block Party from the Las Vegas Metro Police Department.  The Clark County Fire Department is offering wickedly fun photos with members of the fire department.

There will be a screening of “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown”. Times: 5:10pm / 5:40pm / 6:10pm / 6:40PM/ 7:10PM.  Also the “Howl-O-Ween” dog costume contest benefitting the Animal Foundation.

For the kids with allergies the Food Allergy Research & Education’s (FARE’s) Teal Pumpkin Project pop-up display will feature non-candy items for trick-or-treaters.

The Treat Street Halloween at Downtown Summerlin is a free event in a great environment for the young, and the young at heart.  Seriously we have had unfortunate car accidents on Halloween – car vs. kid – and this venue can help prevent a horrible accident.  So bring the family and enjoy all the activities.

Today is Nevada Day – Hooray!

But what is Nevada Day?  Many people that have recently moved to the Silver State have no idea what Nevada Day commemorates – so I am here to give you a quick history lesson.

Nevada Day is a state holiday celebrated in Nevada and commemorates the state’s entry into the United States as the thirty-sixth state on October 31, 1864, and also celebrates this state’s frontier legacy. This holiday used to be celebrated on October 31s, the date of the state’s admission into the Union, but it was moved in 2000. Instead, this holiday is now celebrated on the final Friday in October.

The Nevada State Legislature decided that the holiday should always be celebrated on a Friday. And that’s because a 3-day long holiday weekend is more likely to bring tourists into the state and would generate a lot more interest in the holiday. As a result, they voted to change Nevada Day to the final Friday in October.

The following are some fun and interesting facts about our wonderful state.  The name of the state of Nevada comes from the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.  Nevada was one of two states added to the Union as a state during the Civil War (West Virginia was the other).

Other interesting facts are Nevada is the home to over 300 mountain ranges and over 300 natural hot springs.  We are also the largest gold-producing state in the United States.  From 1951 to 1992, over 900 nuclear tests were conducted at the Nevada Test Site.  Las Vegas has more hotel rooms than any other city on Earth and Nevada is the only state in the United States where prostitution is legal.

Nevada Day is a state holiday, which means that some banks, schools and businesses are closed in Nevada on this day. However, some banks do remain open but close their branches early. While parades and other celebrations happen across the state of Nevada, there is a particular concentration of them in Carson City (state capital).  There is a huge parade that has been held since the 1930s in Carson City and there are a number of events on this day. Events which include sporting events, concerts, a rock drilling contest and even a contest that judges who has the best beard.
