Las Vegas Little Theatre is host to the Vegas Fringe Festival

The ninth annual Vegas Fringe Festival has begun with performances from June 8 – 17 at the Las Vegas Little Theatre at 3920 Schiff Drive near the corner of Spring Mountain and Valley View with performances in both the Mainstage and Black Box Theatres.  There are many new and established plays and performances being performed several times through the dates of the festival and the performances are no longer than 90 minutes. I, myself am performing in one of the shows entitled “Any Body for Tea?”, a whimsical story about a handsome homicide detective who learns his neighbors would “kill” to have tea with him!

So what is a Fringe?  The Fringe started in 1947 as an alternative festival that played concurrently with the Edinburgh International Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Though not invited to participate, groups of actors, musicians, and the like decided to perform at various venues on the fringe of the EIF. Robert Kemp, a local journalist,  in 1948 gave the festival the name Fringe: “Round the fringe of official Festival drama, there seems to be more private enterprise than before…” Kemp wrote.

In the United States no one organization or individual owns, controls or regulates the name “Fringe”. There are no national rules for how each individual festival operates; festival content, finances, and structure vary from city to city.  Generally, all festivals are committed to an open forum of expression that minimizes the financial risks for both artists and audiences. Fringes work hard to keep production fees and ticket prices low so that more people can participate in the festivals.

The performances are not censored – you will find anything from bawdy to family-friendly.  Fringes are a vast variety of genres and feature a wide array of original material—sometimes by design, but usually because that’s what Fringes do naturally well.  The festivals take place in many different cities and countries and can last a few weeks.  In Las Vegas the Fringe lasts for 10 days.

Now you know what a Fringe is – so what is stopping you from getting tickets – there is still time. The website is http://www.lvlt.org/fringe2018

Please Support The Third Annual Super Summer Gala Under the Stars

Super Summer Gala

This Sunday, May 20, starting at 6 p.m. is the Third Annual Gala supporting the incredible Super Summer Theatre, which has been providing Las Vegas residents with top quality amateur theater for over 40 years!  This year they are honoring a founding board member Carolyn Sparks.  The event will be held at their outdoor theater at Spring Mountain State Park.

Sparks is a lifelong resident of Clark County and involved with many, varied humanitarian efforts for the community. She was an original board member of the Super Summer Theater and has served on the boards of Southern Nevada Best Coalition, Las Vegas Natural History Museum, and the Nevada Ballet to name a few.

I feel that keeping cultural events nurtured is important in Las Vegas and 100% of the funds raised at the Gala remain in Southern Nevada to help continue bringing affordable, high-quality productions for our theatre-loving residents to enjoy.

There is a bidding part of the Gala when you can bid on roles in “Wizard of Oz” as well as remarkable donated auction items at the event (or on-line).  If you ever wanted to be a good witch, a wicked witch, a tin man, a lion, a scarecrow, a little girl from Kansas named Dorothy or even a Wizard you’ll have your chance at the Gala’s “Casting Auction”. Top bidder’s get all of the roles, not the director’s sister (unless she is the top bidder). To attend the Gala, or just donate click this link; http://bit.ly/2rHPxxT

This year the Super Summer Theatre is presenting 5 great productions –
Big Fish in May & June
She Loves Me in June & July
Peter Pan & The Wizard of Oz in August
Pirates of Penzance in September (I will be in the cast for this one)

You can go to https://supersummertheatre.org for dates and times. If you can’t make it to the gala (or even if you can), make sure you get out there this summer and see a great show or 2 (or 5)
